Apparently, you weren't the only one caught out by Mr. Mutchnick's oven comment. He's offered a response.

I don't think it gets to quite the level of granularity you and I discussed earlier, but I think it does reflect a greater degree of awareness than you might have suspected.

He does a fine job making you sympathize with him and his situation.

It seems as if he's walked himself (and his kids) into an uncomfortable corner. He feels compelled to establish the dispensibility of a mother. Yet he has not one but two persons involved who are both maternal (if incompletely so) and indispensible.

There are no children without a mother. Fragmented, disowned, and objectified mothers are still mothers. Those kids will grow up and ask a reasonable question: Who is our mother? "There is no mother" is not an answer. Just because the right answer is complicated, awkward, and potentially painful doesn't make it not the right answer.
