Random Gaming Thoughts . . .
Apr. 21st, 2005 02:35 pmFor the past few months, I've been listening to "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" on CD. They're a surprisingly enjoyable set of stories, but that's neither here nor there.
For those who are unfamiliar with the stories, they follow the tragic lives of the Baudelaire orphans as they deal with their parents' deaths and try to find a stable pseudo-home environment. Their chief antagonist is Count Olaf, a villainous actor and master of disguise, who seeks to become the children's guardian so he can obtain control of the Baudelaire fortune.
Each of the Baudelaire Orphans has a shtick:
Violet, the eldest, is an inventor. When confronted with an insurmountable problem, she will tie her hair back with a ribbon, which helps her concentrate on her inventing.
Klaus, the only boy, is a reader. He's got an eidedic memory, and he's not afraid to use it.
Sunny, the baby, is a biter. Her response to nearly any obstacle is to bite it.
During the course of their adventures, the Baudelaire Orphans are physically and mentally abused. They are nearly always placed in the custody of wildly incompetent and neglectful adults. No matter where they're sent, Count Olaf is always close at hand, and no matter how incompetent he might be, the orphans' guardians always seem to be orders of magnitude more incompetent.
Despite the children's brilliance, it seems nearly inevitable the Count Olaf will eventually triumph. And even if he doesn't, given this upbringing, what kind of adults will the Baudelaires grow into?
On to the gaming thoughts:
These characters would be great adversaries for a Spycraft game. Count Olaf could serve nicely as a mastermind, leader of a criminal syndicate founded on the Baudelaire fortune. And Violet, Klaus, and Sunny would make great Bond-esque henchmen. Violet could easily be the fiendish gadgeteer, Klaus could be the mad scientist type responsible for developing the doomsday device, and Sunny . . . well, we're all familiar with Karl Stromberg's sidekick--Jaws, aren't we? Populate their respective bases with appropriately themed mooks, and you've got a campaign.
You can even add the Quagmire Triplets into the Spycraft formula, Duncan and Isadora would make excellent foils for the game.
Someday, if I have the time, I'd love to throw this together . . . . Maybe next year.
