So I just got back from Denver's charity screening of Episode 3.

(In the spirit of full disclosure, I actually liked Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones--they were not high art, but they were enjoyable nonetheless).

Wow.

Lucas did a good job on this one. Far, far better than he did on tPM and AtoC. By alot.

Everything the critics have said about it being a very dark movie is true. And Lucas does a good job of connecting tPM and AotC with ANH, ESB, and RotJ. The action sequences were, as always, great. The story was smoother (though some of the acting was stilted). Anakin's fall was both believable and tragic. The humor was better integrated into the story. R2 wins the prize for best sight gag involving a droid. The dialogue is substantially better (thanks Mr. Stoppard).

Padme has the best line in the film. But I'm not spoiling.

Watching the credits roll, though, the thing that struck me was a profound sense of melacholy. This is it. It's finished. When I go to Seattle this June, my father and I will watch our last Star Wars movie in the theaters. That's kind of sad, really.

But at least this is the note we're going out on. This movie is currently vying with ANH for the #2 spot on my all time ranking of Star Wars movies. It's much better than RotJ.

George, thanks for the bike.
